Bermuda seeks safe disposal of asbestos

Accumulation of waste material containing asbestos became a problem in many communities in Bermuda. Posing potential health, has raised this issue as one that needed to be resolved sooner rather than later.

Asbestos is known to cause acute respiratory illnesses, including lung cancer, Lung poses, and mesothelioma cancer are rare. Despite the health risks of asbestos is still used around the world as building materials, insulation and stabilizing additive. Fire resistant qualities acquired and robustness of asbestos in construction materials list the top of the past century. Unfortunately, not all countries adhere to regulations and guidelines to ensure the health of those dealing with toxic substances. Who is classified as a carcinogen asbestos Type 1 and estimated 90,000 mesothelioma deaths worldwide each year.

Mesothelioma Cancer aggressiveness is a long latency period. Often will follow to the original 50 years asbestos exposure before symptoms appear.  There are mesothelioma treatments available, but there is no known cure.

Canadian company was set to review options for safe disposal of asbestos in Bermuda. Public works Minister said in his debate on his budget for the period 2011-12, "the review included consideration of overseas shipping, treatment in Bermuda, Bermuda's burial and disposal of bathymetric and packaging in place." several options are being considered. Public works Minister and shadow Patricia Gordon bamblin the use of asbestos to make glass type products. She was one of the most successful in the United States.

"The preferred option of landfill disposal of asbestos-containing materials in mobilization as part of the airport improvement project". Public works Minister, and has good feedback from environmental groups.

Deputy Prime Minister Derek Burgess in Bermuda will hold a public consultation in the next fiscal year. The project involves a budget of $ 4.9 million; $ 1.2 million were used for evaluation and planning.

Public works Minister said, "we will consult the public before selecting a final disposal method. It is expected to hold a general consultation, engineering design and roll-out in the next fiscal year. "
